Yahoo Answers

I know Its not a solid source but just found it interesting of what other people say to "how does Greek mythology fit into today's society?"

  • The morals and the ethics that are presented in myths are still relevant, such as the myth of narcissus which advocates regard for others and against self love, which is something we should still remember today. Another example would be that of Prometheus which shows that even if your beliefs are unpopular you must do what you think is right etc...

  • There are many modern things that come from Greek mythology:

    1. Names of many of our cars (Ares & ).
    2. Modern expressions like Achilles Heel.
    3. Names of many companies (Hercules Chemicals).
    4. Product names like Mars candy bars and Nike shoes.
    5. Movie names like Poseidon, and
    6. The names of planets and stars (Mercury, Venus)

  • Our society is founded on many principles of Greek law and democracy.

One of the great leaders back in 469 B.C. and years after his birth - Socrates moto was - "Know Thy Self." Not many of us have followed his advise, for if we would have - this world would be in a much better state of affairs. For if we would have known ourselves we would have reached our potential in our lifetime instead of taking all our gifts to the grave when we died..
  • Socrates - "Know Thy Self." Check out his bio on the internet.

Myths in todays society

some articles that may help:

One thing i remember observing from doing classics back in high school is that Greek Gods held a high status in the eyes of the citizens but they lacked the "purity" of what God and Jesus has within Christianity today. They had strong human emotions and possibly behaved worse than humans, for example majority of myths were based on a exaggerated version of human emotion such as jealousy, anger and love,. the gods would often reveal human like responses to the situation.

Ancient Myths into Modern Movies

Ancient and medieval epic tales like the Iliad and Odyssey, Gilgamesh, and the Chanson de Roland had plots made up of modular elements taken from traditional themes or story lines. Among these themes were The Hero's Life, The Journey, The Marriage of the Fertility Goddess, The Epiphany of a God, and Invention of Technology.
These same themes, with the same panoply of elements, as outlined in the following essay, have persisted through many civilizations, and can be found in our own movies. Such survivals appear not just in self-conscious imitations of Greek and other myth like O Brother Where Art Thou (which purposely adapted plot elements from the Odyssey) but in movies like The Godfather, Jaws, The Phantom of the Opera, and even Lassie Come Home
The same characters also recur in the stories, like The Goddess Across the Water, the Two Helpers, The Substitute Who Dies, and The Trickster-Inventor. We act out the plots of our myths, too, as can be seen in some poignant moments from our space program.

Really love the style and appropriation of a traditional fable idea (although the story is original) present in this short film. It has beautiful aesthetics, right down to the decorative elements in the titles. The film relies on a narrator (theme?) so the dialogue is restricted and a lot of emphasis placed on the actor's body movements and actions.

Moodboards

Annabelle and I have concluded that we like vibrant colours, lens flares, altered reality/surrealism, lomography influenced, stylised imagery.  They all have a dream-like feel, with almost a fantasy element going on.

Foreign Films

Tout Est Parfait
This is a Quebec film directed by Yves-Christian Fournier. It tells the story of a young man trying to cope with the simultaneous suicide of his four friends.

Musical

NINE:

The aesthetics is really appealing and really nicely constructed shots and lighting- also very visually animated- the trailer cut really captures and emphasises the main characters chaotic life

MOULIN ROUGE:

my all time favorite musical

The Illusionist
I really loved the visual style that this story was filmed in. It placed the viewer firmly in the time period and reinforced the "magic" occurring in the tricks. The film has a fairy-talish aesthetic; the sepia toned photography and fog machines emphasise this, as well as the obvious link to silent film style iris transitions.

Pirates of the Carribean
This is also a period styled film and contains lovely aesthetics and special effects used to create the world in which they all live. Bit of a fantasy element with the pirate elements....theme?

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
Although the story took a while to get fully involved with, the visuals of this film are beautifully composed and emphasise the periods that Benjamin is in during his life.

Constantine
This film is based on the comic book Hellblazer by DC/Vertigo. I like the world interaction (Constantine kills half demons in order to earn salvation from a suicide attempt when he was younger).

Van Helsing
Love the visuals and combination of SFX to form the fantasy environment.

Films I Find Interesting- Continued

AMELIE:

just a really cute French film- similar to the aesthetics in the "films i find interesting" post really like the surreal/enhanced colours

PLEASANTVILLE:

about the loss of innocence- I like the combination of black and white film to colour and how the characters contributed to the change

JUNO:

again like the bold colours but i guess the thing i like the most is the main characters attitude towards the situation.

BIG FISH:

I guess I like the combination of film trickery, the elaboration off reality, the colours and aesthetics, also the multiple interesting story lines about one mans life. (plus i just love Tim Burton's style)

I was going to comment on this film also. The fairy-talish vignettes evoke the feelings of a southern-gothic fantasy - Charlotte

More Films

CLOVERFIELD:

sci fi movie i like  the way it has been filmed- by the actors through the handy cam, gives the viewer a more personal experience wih the film

THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT:

made in 1999 prety much the first of its kind that I saw- with the characters being the filmers

PARANORMAL ACTIVITY:

dumb trailer- but i couldn't find one without the audiences reaction again just like the idea of the movie being "created" by the characters.

GANG TAPES:

plot: When a brutal carjacking yields a videocamera, a teenage boy decides to document his life and the lives of his fellow gangbangers- again characters creating the film

Films I Find Interesting

500 Days Of Summer

really like the non liner aspect to the film and the narrative style

expectation vs reality scene- can not find on youtube but i will post it up when i do

CashBack
Film by Sean Ellis- Tralier:

Part one of two- original short film:
captures the pacing of the movie more  than the tralier

Introduction to Cashback:
I found this opening sequence interesting in it pacing in which it was put togeather- the opera like music, the calm almost emotionless narrative vioce, slowed down imagery, all the complete opposite of what the actual event is- allowing the viewer to feel the characters reaction to the situation.

Pan's Labyrinth

Realy beautiful lighting throughout reality scenes- nice combination of blue and orange on either side of the main subject especialy nightime shots towards the begining of the film.

Pushing Daisies

Like the aesthetics of the series, also i find the style of the narrative appealing and complementary to the overall style of the series. it also holds a very particular style in the lighting- kind of happy, contrasting with the underlying theme of the series being based around the idea of death.

TV Shows

Fringe
Fringe is a tv series following an FBI "fringe division" team who use "fringe" science to to investigate "the pattern," a series of unexplained occurences happening all over the world. I really liked the variety of story lines, yet all are linked by the main theme of "the pattern."

'
The Mentalist
Another American crime scene drama (ha). I really enjoy this because Jane's character uses his amazing sense of observation and also mentalist abilities to solve crimes (and maybe a little bit because he's super good looking!)

Grey's Anatomy
The trailer explains it all. Character relations are really important in this show, each are emotionally attached to each other through their experiences at Seattle Grace and relationships.

Desperate Housewives
Pretty much same as Grey's Anatomy in regards to the character relations. The series explores the lives of suburban housewives down Wisteria Lane and their interactions with each other.

Glee
I loved this show, most probably because it was a musical! That would be very interesting to create (I can see Annabelle going nooooo! :P)

Supernatural
Drama/horror series about two brothers who fight demons and other paranormal "beings." Hmm I tend to be leaning towards narratives focussing on relationships between characters....

most of the photos consist of colourful subject matter that have been dulled down or slightly blurred  by the sun flares- the bottom two are grainy and have a Polaroid feel about them

Various Film Aspects I Enjoy

Ghost Ship
This is the inner horror lover coming out but I really love this scene in Ghost Ship. It is edited in such a way that the occurrences are slowly revealed to the character and also the viewers; each moment transitions into another part of the story. The transitions are particularly clever, clearly linked through objects. Pace is extremely important in creating the overall mood of this scene, important moments/character revelations are slowed down whereas others are sped up to signify the little girls distress through the massacre. The audio track is a major contributor to the overall mood also.

Layer Cake
I really enjoy the opening monologue of this film. The editing stays constant throughout the film, scenes are clearly linked through timed transitions. The colourings are also really well done.

Two Cars, One Night
Short film by Taiika Whititi. This is a really cute example of a short film that explores a brief moment in time. Rather then focussing on a larger moment, Taiika has chosen to depict a moment where unexpected joy is found in the everyday, in particular in the carpark of a rural NZ pub.

Boy

Also directed by Taiika Whititi. I've read the script and it looks good! Boy is about a young boy(called Boy) who lives in a fantasy world where his Dad is a war hero, rugby player (etc) where in reality he is wannabe gangster.

Sweeny Todd
The overall style of this film is beautiful. Musical too :)

Luka Kase - Moments in Narrative Photography

Although these are not film based they are closely related with photography. I really love the moods Luka has created according to each portrait, he tries to discover the hidden side of the subject and reveal a whole new identity of that person. The colourings and tonings are ones that we could observe for aesthetic styles of our film.
